Mountain Thunder News

Mtn. Thunder sweeps 10U, 12U and 14U divisions of the Hollidaysburg Invitational.

Mountian Thunder U-12 wins Hollidaysburg Classic ASA Girl's Fastpitch Championship.
Thunder went 5-1 to capture 1st place in the tournament. After a long rain delay, play started with a solid performance from the entire team. Jenna Miller earn the win with a 6-0 victory.
In the second game, Thunder earned a 6-1 victory over an underrated team named the Stingers.
Jenna Miller added another win to her collection but the game was much closer than the final score stated. Danica Shafer lead the offense with a pair of singles. The final game of the afternoon matched the two undefeated teams. After 12 + hours of travel, play, and rain delays. The girl's fought deep into the 5 inning with a 0-1 score.  They simply ran out of gas and dropped the game 0-4.
Sunday morning was weclomed with a late start and a rested Thunder team. Jenna Miller was perfect in the first game of the day. 3 up, 3 down, no walks, no hits, no errors, 18 straight outs. Leading bats in the 8-0 victory were Jenna with a triple, Chelsea Muir just shy of the hitting for the cycle (single, double, triple), and Katie Hoban with a double. The second game showed how Thunder will fight down to the last player. Thunder found themselves down 3-1 and one out in the 5th Lexi Nicklin hitting in the 9th postion fought back from an 0-2 count and earned a walk. This started a offensive attack that was heard around the park. Two singles and four extra base hits scored the next 7 batters. The defense held and Thunder added a few more runs for the 11-3 victory. Leading the charge was Danica Shafer with a home run, Jenna Miller-double, Chelsea Muir-Triple, and Katie Llewellyn-double/triple.  Jenna Miller collected the win.
The championship game matched Thunder against Stingers once more. The underrated team had refenged their earlier loss to the host team. They sought to avange their loss to Thunder as well and jumped out to 6-2 lead half way through the 3rd. After pitching 5 straight games Jenna was relieved by Katie Llewellyn who allowed only one more run in the contest. The girls fought back each inning to chip away at the lead.  With the game tied in the bottom of the 7,  the first four batter's produced the game winning run. Another example of hard work equals great results. Llewellyn earned the win. Leading bats were Shelly Buser with 4 singles including the game winner. Chelsea Muir and Lexi Nicklin also had 3 singles.

USSSA MAY CHALLENGE

Mountain Thunder U-12 girls placed 2ND in the USSSA May Challenge.  Alex Northcraft allowed only one hit and struck out 9 to earn the 7-1 victory in the first game of the day. Katie Hoban lead the offense with a triple. Jenna Miller also hit a pair of singles. The second game resulted in Thunder's first loss of the season. Danica Shafer hit 2 singles to lead the offensive. After their first loss, the Thunder took out their anger with the bats in the final game. The girl's scored 9 runs in the 1st inning to earn a 15-3 win. Jenna Miller allowed just 3 hits and struck out 7 to earn the victory. Katie "Grace" Llewellyn lead the offensive with a triple and a single. Chelsea Muir hit a double. Jenna Miller, Danica Shafer, Shelly Buser and Lexi Nick collected numerous hits.

Mt. Thunder U10 wins Mother's Day Tournament went 3-0, Molly Winner earned the 11-2 victory posting 10 strikeouts. The offensive power was led by Molly's single and two doubles. Haley Smith and McKenna Broadwater had two single's each.

The second game was a barn burner. Thunder jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning and held on for a 9-8 victory. Molly Winner earned the win. Kara Kyle's singled and stoled home for the game winning.
In the third game Molly Winner pitched another dominating performance with a 20-4 victory. The offense was led by Madison Green's bases loaded clearing double. Tessa Lutton and Sarah Holtschneider had two singles each.

Mountain Thunder U-12 wins Mother's Day Tournament.
Thunder went 3-0 to win back-to-back championships.
Jenna Miller earned the 13-3 victory. The offensive power was lead by Chelsea Muir's monster shot and her double.  Shelley Buser scored 3 runs to max the run total.
The second game was the Alex Northcraft Show.  Alex threw a no-hitter and accounted for 8 of the 9 outs. Thunder quickly won the game 16-0.  Thunder finished the day with a 1-0 bottom of the 6Th victory.  Another shut-out for the defense with Jenna Miller collecting the win. Chelsea Muir lead the hitters with  2 singles.
Thunder's defense ended the tournament surrendering only 3 total runs.

Mt Thunder U-12 wins USSSA "May Dance" Qualifier. The Thunder went
undefeated in the team's first tournament of the year.

Jenna Miller was the force behind the 6-1 victory in the opener. Jenna
fired a one-hitter and lead the team hitting with 2 doubles. Katie Hoban
and Lexi Wilhelm followed with 2 singles each.
Game 2 showcased more of the Thunder's defense. Behind Alex Northcraft's
pitching, the girls only allowed one run. Leading the offense to the 4-1
victory was Katie Llewellyn going 2 for 2.

The final game matched Thunder against the class of the field.

After allowing 3 runs in the first, Alex Northcraft and the defense shut out
the Orange Crush the remainder of the game. Thunder won the 4-3 victory with
a game-winning 2 run RBI single by Molly Deckers.

An outstanding effort by all the girls in their first tournament. Clearly
the "Thunder" has been heard around the Chambersburg area.

Mountain Thunder U12 team finishes third in tournament.  Details to follow:

Results from Spring Xtreme in Latrobe, PA for U12 Blue:

Overall: 2 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie
Game 1: Thunder v Spirit Mahoney
	Score:	Thunder 1 - Mahoney 1
Recap:	Carlie Lewis pitched a complete, 1 hit gem, supported by an
error-free Thunder defense. For the first game of the year, the Thunder
bats were a little quiet. We put bat to ball, but the Mahoney defense held
strong. Seven innings was played in 70 minutes. A great game to start the
year!

Game 2:	Thunder v Spirit Matty
	Score:	Thunder 17 - Matty 0
Recap:	Jenna Miller pitched a no hitter! As the score indicates,
everyone hit and hit well.

Game 3:	Thunder v Spirit Adams
	Score:	Thunder 5 - Adams 4
Recap:	With the score tied 4-4 and one out in the bottom of the
last inning, Amanda Duvall rips a run producing triple to right center field
that ends the game! Again, the defense played great and Carlie Lewis got
the win in the circle.

Game 4:	Thunder v Spirit Mahoney
	Score:	Thunder 0 - Mahoney 12
Recap:	Although the score is lopsided, the girls did a wonderful
job, especially given the weather and field conditions.

End result:	Tie for 3rd out of 9 teams. Not bad for the first of the
year!

Former player receives Outstanding Athlete award at High School Graduation.  Erin Mathews played catcher for our very first U14 and U16 teams.  She was a great leader and one of the hardest working girls that I know.  Erin was the starting Catcher for Bishop Walsh High School for the past 2 years.  She was consistently a leader in fielding, hitting, and a true team captain.  Erin exemplifies what a player from Mountain Thunder should be:  hard working, respected by her peers, a leader, exceling in the classroom as well as on the field, polite, honest, dedicated, a true lady.  Erin currently is the catching coach for the U16 team.  Erin will be attending Mt. Saint Mary's College in the fall.  Good Luck Erin and thanks for helping make this organization a success.

Mountain Thunder organization holds 2nd annual Mothers Day 1 Day tournament for U10 and U12 teams.  In the U10 division there was a three way tie for first place between the Cumberland Heat, Tri-County Thunder, and PA Blitz.  The tie breaker that broke the tie was Runs Allowed.  The final results are:  Cumberland Heat, 1st place with 4 runs allowed, and the PA Blitz, 2nd place with 7 runs allowed.  In the U12 division we again had a tie for 1st place between the Cumberland Heat and Mountain Thunder.  Both teams posted a perfect 3-0 record for the day.  Runs Allowed again became the tie breaker.  The final results are:  Cumberland Heat, 1st place and Mountain Thunder 2nd place.  Thanks to all of the teams that came and played hard all day and a special thanks to all of the parents and players who came out and worked the concession stands, did field maintenance and helped make this a great weekend.

The U-12 & U-14 Thunder teams participate in PA State Pony "B" tournament over the weekend in Chambersburg, PA.  The U-12 squad short-handed on Saturday went 1-2 and was seeded 9th.  The team came out ready to play with a full squad on Sunday morning winning the first game before dropping the second game in the quarterfinals to finish 4th out of 14 teams.  Over all a good weekend for the U-12 Thunder.  The U-14 squad came out on Saturday like gang busters winning the first game 10-2 over The Rock from Philadelphia, PA.  Game two was just like the first.  The squad came out in the first inning and put up 5 runs and behind the 10 strikeout performance of Marley Nolan defeated the NFPL Thunder 10-0.  Game 3 was a little different.  The squad came out flat and with untimely base running errors as well as untimely hitting the squad fell behind 2-0 through 3 innings.  The squad kept coming and so did the Thunderstorms.  The U-14 team had fought back to tie the score and Kelsey Robertson pitching in relief kept them in the game until the their last at bats.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out.  Kasie Shoemaker stepped to the plate and lightning struck thus stopping the game in a tie.  This would prove to be an unfortunate break as the team got the 3rd seed instead of the 2nd seed.  The team would lose to the Westminster Rockets on Sunday morning 5-4, but bounced back to win the consolation game 12-5.  With a
3-1-1 record for the weekend it was a great time and gave us a positive out-look to next season.

July 9/10, 2005

June 25/26, 2005
The Thunder teams travel to Richmond, Virginia this weekend to play in the Virginia "B" Pony Invitational Tournament.  The tournament will be followed by a trip to Kings Dominion for some fun.

Wow! what a tournament.  The U-12 and U-10 teams played there hearts out on Sunday and finished 3rd.  Strong pitching, clutch hitting and some spectacular defense helped both teams.  The U-14 team which went 1-1-1 on Saturday came out flat as a pancake on Sunday morning and lost 7-4.  There were signs of greatness mixed in with the lackluster performance.  All in all it was a great tournament.  Kings Dominion was a blast.  Did I mention that the whole weekend the area was under a heat advisory with the temperatures averaging 97 degrees each day with 100% humiditiy.  Dog days of summer was given a new meaning for those 3 days in Richmond.

June 18/19, 2005
The U-12 Thunder team travels to Chambersburg while the U-10 and U-14 teams will be playing close to home in the Cumberland Heat Pony National Qualifier.  WOW, what a weekend.  The U-12 Thunder team went to Chambersburg and either fielded the ball or hit the ball real well that just weren't able to do both at the same time.  They went 0-5 on the weekend.  They are showing signs of improvement and by the end of the season they will be really rolling.  The U-10 team had its ups and downs put did manage to win 2 games.  They beat the Md. Flames on Saturday during pool play and then again on Sunday morning during the double elimination round.  The U-10's finished 3rd.  The U-14 Thunder came out on Saturday and waited till the last inning against the River City Rippers to start hitting the ball and came up a little short 7-4.  In there second game against National Power House the Bayside Blues from Calvert County, Maryland they played them 1-1 through 5 innings only to boot the ball 3 times in the inning and give up 6 un-earned runs.  They ended up losing 9-1.  On Sunday, the U-14's came out with new determination and played the 8-9 Seed game for the right to play the #1 seeded Bayside Blues.  Behind a strong pitching effort from Kelsey Robertson and Miranda Nicol the team held on for a hard fought 2-0 victory.  The team got another strong pitching effort from Marley Nolan in the re-match with the Blues.  The offense clicked early with the Thunder team taking an early 4-0 lead after 3 innings.  But the Blues would chip away and chip away until they tied it in there last at bats 4-4.  The two teams then went into an International Tie Breaker.  The Blues where only able to score 1 run and take a 5-4 lead, but the Thunder team responded with a single by Vanessa Shaffer to bring in Kasie Shoemaker and tie the score followed by a blast by Kecia Willison to plate Shaffer and thus give the U-14's a 6-5 upset win over the Blues.  Game 3 of the day would be played immediatley following the Blues game and the girls just ran out of steam in dropping a hard fought 6-4 game to the Tri-State Thunder from Martinsburg, WV.  A third place finish was quite an accomplishment.

June 11, 2005
The U-10 and U-16 Thunder teams play host to a 1-day tournament in Frostburg.  The rain and the lack of teams almost eliminated the U-10 tournament.  We were able to play 1 game between Mtn. Thunder and Cumberland Heat.  The Heat came out on top 6-5.  In the U-16 bracket with the games starting at 8 am and with several rain delays the last game finished up at 9 pm.  A special thanks to all that came and played and to all of those who helped maintain the field between games and between rain drops.  The U-16 Champion was the Cumberland Heat going 3-1 and scoring 37 runs.  The U-16 Runner-up was the PA. Comets going 3-1 and scoring 34 runs.  The U-16 Thunder team finished 1-3 and are still in need of 2-3 players to fill out their roster.

The U-12 and U-14 Thunder teams where on the road again traveling to Harrisburg, PA to participate in the PA, NASF State Championships.  The U-12's came out on Saturday losing to the Blitz in the first game then rebounding in the 2nd and 3rd games of the day to end up as the number 2 seed heading into Sunday.  Great Job U-12's.  On Saturday, what could go wrong went wrong for the U-14 team.  In the first game with the score knotted at 0-0 heading into the top of the 6th the heavens opened and we sat for over 2 hours while it rained and the fields were repaired.  After we started up in muddy conditions, tired, wet they dropped a heart breaker 4-2.  After a short time to dry off and run back to the hotel for some warm/dry clothing the team was on the diamond again.  Dropping back to back games by the scores of 9-5 and 13-4.  By the time the team got out of there it was 10 pm. and had to be back ready to play by 8 am the following morning.  The following day wasn't any better.  Sore arms and tired bodies helped to send the team home early with 11-4 and 9-5 loses.
